LOCAL SWEET ADELINES TO COMPETE FOR REGIONAL HONORS

Cincinnati, OH/March 12, 2007—The brand new Cincinnati Sound Chorus will join about 1000 women who will compete at the Northern KY Convention Center April 21 in the Sweet Adelines International Region #4 annual competition.  A cappella presentations of songs from the 1890s to the 1990s—arranged for womens-four-part harmony—will be performed in costumed, choreographed production numbers.

“Share the Harmony” is the theme of the competition which is open to the public.  Among the 16 choruses and 22 quartets from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia, Saturday’s lineup will include the Cincinnati Sound Chorus, a brand new chorus formed by the merger of two award-winning locally based choruses:  the Queen City Chorus and the Seven Hills Show Chorus.   Also performing will be the Gem City Chorus, 2006 fourth place International medalists from Dayton, Ohio.  Winners of both the quartet and the chorus contests will be named regional champions and win the opportunity to advance to Sweet Adelines International competitions.

Events include:  Friday’s Quartet Contest beginning at 1:00 p.m., Saturday’s Chorus Contest also beginning at 1:00 p.m., and on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. “Rockin’ By the Riverside”, a party with a DJ, show of champions, snacks, and cash bar.

All sessions are open to the public. Tickets will be available April 20th & 21st at the Northern KY Convention Center for $25 per session.  Party tickets are $15. For more information, please contact Ricki Vogel, 513-554-2648 or r.vogel@fuse.net.

BARBERSHOP HARMONY
Developed during the late 1800s in the United States,.barbershop harmony is a uniquely American musical art form. It is characterized by unaccompanied, four-part vocal harmony and the "expanded sound" created by its unique chord structure. Melody line is sung by the lead voice, tenor sings harmony, above the lead, bass sings low harmony, and baritone sings a harmony part in the middle, sometimes below or sometimes above the lead.  The names for the voice parts apply both to female and male barbershop singers. Correct vocal production by all voice parts will create a “ring” or “overtone," that is, a fifth tone an octave above the tonic note which is not being sung but can be heard by the human ear.
