Sweet Adelines Sing To Welcome Tri-State’s Newest U.S. Citizens, Friday, April 3 @ 10:30 a.m.

Christmas City Chorus, from Marion, Indiana, a highly successful small chorus of 22 women, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, under the direction of Zoe Hagy, has re-arranged their competition weekend’s plans so that they can be in Covington the morning of Friday, April 3rd to sing at that morning’s Swearing-In Naturalization Ceremony to be held at the Northern KY Convention Center. They will perform a medley of patriotic songs; they are thrilled to have been asked to participate in this very special occasion. “As a naturalized citizen of the U.S. myself, I can truly attest to what a wonderful surprise and thrill this will be for these "new" Americans! I get goose-bumps thinking about it,” says SAI, Region #4 Management Team Leader, Toula Oberlies. The Swearing-In Ceremony will begin at 10:30 am.

On the next day, Saturday, April 4, the chorus will compete with fourteen other choruses ranging in size from 20 to 100+ from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia to show their best costumed, choreographed package of a cappella harmony. The winning chorus will represent Region #4 at the International Contest in the fall of 2010 in Seattle, Washington.

The day before, on Friday, April 3, quartets of women from Region #4 will compete for the opportunity to represent the region at this year’s International Contest in Nashville, Tennessee. Both contests will begin at 1 PM at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.

   Friday, April 3, Quartet Competition, beginning at 1:00 PM
   Saturday, April 4, Chorus Competition, beginning at 1:00 PM

All sessions are open to the public. Tickets will be available at the door of the Northern KY Convention Center for $25 per session. Student tickets are $15 per session.

SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL

• A highly respected worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing
  the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. This independent, nonprofit, music education association is one of the world's largest singing organizations for women.
• The international membership of nearly 25,000 women, all singing in English, includes choruses in most of the fifty United States, as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden and the Netherlands. There are also prospective choruses in Denmark, Greece and United Arab Emirates.
• The organization encompasses more than 1,200 registered quartets and 600 choruses.

EAST CENTRAL REGION #4 COMPETITION

• Annual event; highlight of our Sweet Adeline year
• Features about 1,000 women from a four-state region encompassing parts of Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, & West Virginia performing in quartets and choruses.
• Competing choruses range from 20 to more than 100 singers.
• Competitors judged on Music, Sound, Expression and Showmanship.
• Quartet Contest is Friday, April 3, 1:00 p.m.
• Chorus Contest is Saturday, April 4, 1:00 p.m.
• Contest is at Northern Kentucky Convention Center.
• Open to the public; Tickets available at the door --$25 per session ($15 Students)
• The regional champion quartet will compete at the 2009 International Competition in Nashville, Tennessee. The regional champion chorus will compete at the 2010 International Competition in Seattle, Washington.

BARBERSHOP HARMONY

• Barbershop harmony is a uniquely American musical art form characterized by unaccompanied, four-part vocal harmony and the "expanded sound" created by its unique chord structure. Melody line is sung by the lead voice; tenor sings harmony above the lead; bass sings low harmony; baritone sings a harmony part in the middle, sometimes below or sometimes above the lead. The names for the voice parts apply both to female and male barbershop singers.
• Correct vocal production by all voice parts will create a “ring” or “overtone”; that is, a fifth tone an octave above the tonic note which is not being sung but can be heard by the human ear.
• The barbershop style lends itself to songs from any era – today’s ballads, popular show tunes, even jazz. Sweet Adelines’ have performed their unique style of music in a number of popular venues from professional sports stadiums, Olympic ceremonies, with major symphonies, and even on national television shows.
