New Runway Under Construction at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport

Covington, KY…June 17, 2003 …Ground was broken last week on construction of a new runway at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).

Scheduled for completion in late 2005, the 8,000-foot runway will be the third north-south runway at CVG.  The new runway represents the second new runway built at CVG in less than 15 years.  The last new runway opened in 1991.

Construction on a 2,000-foot extension of the existing 10,000-foot east-west runway also is underway and scheduled for completion in the second half of 2004.  The two runway construction projects represent a $237 million capital investment for CVG.

According to CVG officials, the east-west runway is being extended to enable its usage by larger jets to reach destinations in eastern Europe and Asia.  CVG already offers daily nonstop service to London, Paris, Frankfurt and Rome.

The new north-south runway is being added to allow continued operating efficiency at CVG, which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has projected to remain one of the fastest growing airports in the U.S. over the next 10 years.

CVG serves more than 20 million passengers annually, a figure that has more than doubled in the past decade.  CVG currently offers more than 600 daily departures to 120 cities.

Delta’s Second Largest Hub
The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has been in an accelerated growth mode since 1994, when its facilities were doubled by massive expansions of the Delta Air Lines and Comair hubs.  CVG is now home to Delta’s second largest hub and Comair’s largest hub. The largest development project in Delta’s history, its $375 million expansion at CVG added 25 gates, a new 840,000-square-foot concourse, a new 340,000-square-foot terminal and a new automated baggage system.  Delta now operates 50 gates at CVG, including 10 that accommodate international flights.

Comair’s Largest Hub
Comair, the Cincinnati-based Delta connection and regional carrier, significantly expanded its operation at the airport in 1994 by building a $50 million flight center.  The 100,000-square-foot center brought Comair’s gates to 53.

Comair recently completed another expansion of its concourse facility, making it the world’s largest regional airline facility.  Currently operating a fleet of 90 regional jets, Comair now offers exclusive jet service on every flight from CVG.

In 2000, Comair was named “Regional Airline of the Year” by Air Transport World Magazine, and “Best Managed Regional Airline” by Aviation Week and Space Technology Magazine.

CVG Rated #1 U.S. Gateway in Passenger Survey
An independent survey of 70,000 international travelers conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) ranked CVG as the top U.S airport and among the top 10 worldwide.  IATA’s annual survey ranked more than 50 airports worldwide in more than two dozen categories of service and convenience, including ease of connections, comfort of waiting lounges and quality of food service.

Since 1994, travelers have consistently ranked CVG one of the best airports in the world in surveys by IATA, ACNielsen, OAG Worldwide and Regional Airline World magazine.  In 2002, frequent travelers from 77 nations rated CVG the #2 U.S. airport in a report published by London-based Skytrax Research.
